How much should I tip at a restaurant?
The standard restaurant tip in the United States is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. As a general guide: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for excellent service. If the service was poor due to the server (not the kitchen), 10% is acceptable.
In other countries tipping customs vary significantly — in Japan tipping is not customary and can be considered rude, while in the UK 10–15% is typical, and in Australia tipping is appreciated but not expected.
How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100: Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100).
Example: 20% tip on a $45.00 bill: $45 × 0.20 = $9.00 tip. Total = $45 + $9 = $54.00.
A quick mental math shortcut: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20%. For a $45 bill, 10% = $4.50, so 20% = $9.00.
How do you split a bill with tip between multiple people?
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people: Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ People.
Example: $45 bill + $9 tip = $54 total ÷ 3 people = $18 per person.
If people ordered different amounts, it's fairer to calculate each person's tip individually based on what they ordered, then split any shared items equally.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount, since tax is a government charge and not part of the service. However, tipping on the post-tax total is widely accepted and is slightly more generous to the server — the difference is usually less than a dollar.
Is it rude not to tip?
In the United States, where servers often earn a sub-minimum tipped wage (as low as $2.13/hour federally), not tipping is generally considered rude and can significantly harm the server's income. Tips make up the majority of a server's earnings.
In countries where service charges are included in prices or where workers earn a living wage, not tipping is entirely acceptable — and in some cultures, tipping is actually discouraged.
